Alison Goldfrapp responds to 'outing'
Singer Alison Goldfrapp has talked about being “outed”, after her relationship with a woman was revealed recently in a national newspaper. In late December 2009, in a feature titled ‘The Rise of Mid-Life Lesbians’, The Sunday Times announced that the 43-year-old singer of Goldfrapp had recently started dating hip film editor Lisa Gunning. The singer, in a follow-up interview with The Times on 26 February, said that the piece had been “a bit of a shocker” and she had not known in advance that she and Gunning were to be mentioned.
“Suddenly your life is seen in a completely different context,” she said about being labeled lesbian. “I’m not very comfortable with that sort of thing, because I don’t like to court any attention other than if it’s really to do with the music.”
However, although open about her relationship with Gunning, Goldfrapp resisted pigeonholing her sexuality.
“I don’t know why people would find it surprising. Everything we’ve ever done – the music, the looks, the shows – has all been quite ambiguous and undefinable, and that’s how I am. I don’t like to be defined by my sexuality, which swings wherever I like to swing. I’ve had lovely, long relationships with men as well. I just happen to be in a relationship with a lady at the moment.”
Goldfrapp’s new single – the rather fabulous ‘Rocket’, is out 8 March, while the band’s fifth album, Head First, is out 22 March. www.goldfrapp.com
