ANGELA EAGLE CAMPAIGN PROMISES TO 'SMASH THE GLASS CEILING FOR LGBT PEOPLE WORLDWIDE'
BRITAIN’S FIRST OUT LESBIAN MP IS RUNNING FOR LABOUR’S DEPUTY LEADERSHIP.
The campaign team behind Angela Eagle’s bid to become the next Deputy Leader of the Labour Party say that a victory for the MP would smash the glass ceiling for LGBT people worldwide as they urge the community to support her.Eagle, who is Britain’s first openly lesbian MP, announced her intention to run for the top job after Labour’s General Election defeat. If elected to the job Eagle will become one of the most powerful and influential LGBT politician’s in Europe. Angela Eagle came out as Britain’s first openly gay female MP in 1997 after being elected to represent the once Tory stronghold of Wallasey.
The politician has long been a champion of LGBT and women’s rights and played a key role in delivering the Civil Partnership Act, the equalisation of the age of consent and the repeal of Section 28. Eagle also campaigned to lift the ban on openly gay people serving in the military and for lesbian fertility rights. The MP, who won a British LGBT Award in 2014, is now campaigning to promote tolerance and respect for LGBT people in countries around the world where homosexuality is illegal.Eagle's campaign has already won the backing of Labour’s grandees including Dame Margaret Beckett MP and the former Labour General Secretary Lord Ray Collins of Highbury.
Now the MP’s Deputy Leadership campaign team is now urging the LGBT community to back her. PR guru and Eagle’s campaign agent, Barrie Grunewald, urged the LGBT community to support the MP.Grunewald said:“Angela Eagle has been a leading and high profile campaigner for LGBT rights for over thirty years. As Labour’s Deputy Leader she would become one of Europe’s most influential gay politician’s and would use her position to carry on fighting for equality. Angela’s election to this role would smash the glass ceiling for gay people worldwide as she out to proves that being gay is no barrier to reaching the top. Angela can very much win this race but the support of the LGBT community will be crucial.
"We’re building a fund to fight the election and I hope LGBT people will contribute. Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help Angela. We’re also encouraging LGBT people to sign up as supporters too.”
