Spectator writer's homophobic review of Dusty biography

Dusty Springfield biogThe Spectator and it's columnist, Roger Lewis have been widely condemned for publishing a review online of a Dusty: An Intimate Portrait of a Musical Legend, by Karen Bartlett. The columnist started with the sentence "Call me a crazy old physiognomist, but my theory is that you can always spot a lesbian by her big thrusting chin" and then continued with "there’s a touch of Desperate Dan in the jaw-bone area, no doubt the better to go bobbing for apples."

It has caused condemnation of The Spectator with angry comments added by readers saying "He seems to know nothing about the music of the time" ... "Nothing about Dusty's achievements musically and as a producer, or her longer term influence. Just celebrity gossip."

Roger Lewis has now suffered since. Last week, PinkNews reported that Biteback Publishing had withdrawn an offer of a book deal with him over his comments. Iain Dale, the company’s managing director and LBC radio presenter, wrote in a letter to The Spectator: “I’m surprised and appalled by your decision to publish Roger Lewis’ review of our book Dusty: An Intimate Portrait."

Dale continued: “The reviewer clearly displays homophobic sentiments towards his subject and, indeed, a litany of other celebrity lesbians. The reasoning behind your decision is as incomprehensible to me as his overt homophobia is. We had been discussing with Mr Lewis the possibility of publishing his next book. He has just been told those discussions are at an end.”

Dusty: An Intimate Portrait of a Musical Legend, by Karen Bartlett is published by The Robson Press
