Stonewall Summer Party success
This year’s Stonewall Summer Party, which took place at the Kensington Roof Gardens on Friday (22 June), raised an impressive £51,000 for the LGB equal-rights charity. Over 400 people attended the event – which was supported by Société Générale, g3, Out In The City and Out News. The money raised will go towards Stonewall’s Education for All campaign, which tackles homophobic bullying in schools.
The event was hosted by Dr Christian Jessen (from TV’s Embarrassing Bodies), who gave a moving speech in praise of the charity, saying, “Over the years my admiration and respect for Stonewall and the work they do has gone nuclear… Their campaign to fight homophobic bullying in schools strikes a chord with me. It’s shocking that homophobia is endemic in British schools – I find that extremely embarrassing. The work Stonewall do really does make a difference. It will help stamp it out.” Dr Jessen is pictured here with his partner Rogerio Barretto (right) and Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill (left).
Other celebrity guests included Louie Spence, Beverley Knight, Russell Tovey, Julian Clary, Jane Hill and Gok Wan. Although the early part of the event was open to advance ticket-holders only, the general public were allowed to join the festivities later in the evening, with the night concluding with a spectacular fireworks display.
Catherine Bosworth, Stonewall Director of Fundraising, said: “Thanks to our supporters at Société Générale every penny raised on Friday will help us make a real difference to thousands of lesbian, gay and bisexual young people around Britain. This was our biggest ever Summer Party – and yet again, we’re overwhelmed by our individual supporters’ generosity.”
